Interior Design Has A Race Problem

Gambar
For a world that celebrates – and often steals from – global culture and diversity, behind the glossy exterior, the interior design industry is ironically and startlingly uniform. From lists of top-50 UK designers to panel speakers to homes that appear in magazine shoots, those featured are often white.  Not that we really know. The industry doesn't have central statistics on its members (something some campaigners think needs to change). But for those people of colour working in the interior design world, it is blindingly obvious.  "We're Walking On Eggshells": Coping With Racism In An Inter-Racial Marriage This issue, of course, is nothing new. But the shockwaves felt around the world from the urgent focus on Black Lives Matters campaigns have prompted some – but by no means all – to take a hard look at how the interiors world can work harder to become more diverse and tackle endemic racism at the heart of the industry.  Earlier this month, Yinka Ilori, the designer...

These DC Interior Designers Are Making Over People’s Zoom Rooms

Gambar
Photos courtesy of Residents Understood. When quarantine began, Kiera Kushlan and Jessica Centella, founders of DC interior design firm Residents Understood, started hearing from past clients with an only-in-2020 kind of problem: They needed help making their home workspaces more efficient, but they also wanted to know how to make them look better on camera. The designers say many of the early calls came from consultants and lawyers, who suddenly found themselves having to reveal their home decor to clients during Zoom meetings. The inquiries were frequent enough that Kushlan and Centella were inspired to launch a whole new service: a virtual design package wherein, for $350, they'll take a video tour of your home, give you a 30- to 60-minute consultation, and follow up with a checklist of ways you can improve your space. People who want even more help can opt for a next-level package that costs $1,500, and comes with a much more comprehensive design plan, plus a Pinterest ...

Home of the Week: An interior designer’s home inside and out

204 Donlea Dr., Toronto Asking Price: $2.499-million Taxes: $9,501.27 (2019) Story continues below advertisement Lot Size: 29 feet by 135 feet Listing Agent: Susan Krever, Chestnut Park Real Estate Limited The backstory If you're wondering what inspired the design of 204 Donlea Dr., detour around to the back of the house, through the lush garden and explore the potting shed with the bell-shaped roof. This was one of the first new things Dana Mallany and her husband built when they bought the house 28 years ago, long before they undertook an extensive renovation of the former bungalow in 2007. "We loved the potting shed, we wanted the house to relate to that in some way," said Ms. Mallany, and so the cedar shingle cladding that wraps around the house's new second-floor borrows from it. The four-walls coverage of the cedar was intentional for another reason. "I have a lot of trouble with builder's houses when it's just a façade, and...

Citroen Grand C4 SpaceTourer review

Gambar
Many people carriers are dowdy and dull, but the Grand C4 SpaceTourer is anything but, as it blends space with stand-out styling. At the front, the low-line headlamps are incorporated into Citroen's double chevron front grille, which runs the width of the car. This means the C4 has a minimalist yet smart appearance, helped by the wide-set second pair of light clusters and fog lights lower down the bumper. Advertisement - Article continues below Citroen's designers have managed to keep the car's side profile visually appealing – there's masses of metal, but also enough glass to balance it out, so the overall shape doesn't look awkward. The doors feature some gently sculpted surfaces, while the large, matt-grey roof rails that run from the base of the windscreen to the rear of the car add extra interest, along with the 18-inch turbine-style wheels on top-spec models. The design is more reserved at the rear, with the tail-lights acting as the main styling element. This...

Galaxy Fold 2 will have a much better design than the first-gen model

Gambar
As the Galaxy Fold 2 release date approaches, more leaks trickle online, with a new report revealing new details about the foldable phone's design. The new foldable handset will supposedly feature a much better design than the original foldable. A leaker says the handset will feature a generous screen in tablet mode, flanked by super-thin, uniform bezels, and featuring a hole-punch selfie cam. The Galaxy Fold will be forever associated with the dawn of foldable devices. Samsung's handset wasn't technically the first foldable phone in the world, but it was the first such device coming from one of the main handset vendors. Not to mention that Samsung has been teasing foldable screens for several years, suggesting that the company will be at the forefront of this evolutionary wave for mobile devices. Unfortunately, the Galaxy Fold wasn't a triumphant launch. The phone featured a couple of design issues that were serious enough for Samsung to delay the r...

How a 'Luxe Pantry' Transformed This Designer's Cramped NYC Kitchen

Gambar
From House Beautiful In New York City, space always comes at a premium, so when interior designer Amy Courtney came across a 600-square-foot apartment—palatial by Manhattan standards— overlooking the Hudson, no less, she didn't think twice before making an offer. The catch? The home's quirky layout included a tiny, five-foot-long kitchen with a two-burner stove and no freezer—meaning a renovation would be a must. "Everyone who looked at it saw those [oddities]," says Courtney, "but it also had water views, tall ceilings, and was on the 16th floor." Located on the Upper West Side near Lincoln Center and Juilliard, the rest of the pre-war apartment was set up to take full advantage of its square footage as possible, with a large bedroom and a bathroom, and was cheerful and bright. "Light is so important to us and helped draw us to the space. It's a big mood-changer," the designer says. Courtney's first challenge upon moving in was giving the ...

Interior designers reveal 9 things in your kitchen you should get rid of

Gambar
Insider asked interior designers to share which kitchen items and designs are worth getting rid of. The pros said you should toss or upcycle extra dish towels and oven mitts, especially if they're worn or don't match your kitchen. Seldom-used cookbooks and appliances take up space and aren't always worth keeping. Open shelving, especially if it features mismatched items, may not be contributing much to your space. Visit Insider's homepage for more stories. From cluttered countertops to overflowing junk drawers, some of us could use a bit of help organizing our kitchen. But sometimes it's hard to know what to let go of and what to keep. To narrow it down, Insider asked three interior designers to share which kitchen items should be tossed or decluttered. 11 Design Experts Share Their Favorite Spot at Home

Interior Designer Mikel Welch is not one to sit still. Hosting his Quibi show Murder House Flip, decorating stunning homes for clients, and designing green rooms for celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and former First Lady Michelle Obama keep him on the move. A few months ago, however, Mikel, just like most of us, had to switch up his routine and work from home. Mikel says this time at home has given him a newfound appreciation for the calming qualities of one space in particular: his living room. It features lush textiles, a giant barn door and other rustic touches reminiscent of Sag Harbor, NY, his favorite vacation destination. Whether enjoying his morning cup of coffee on the sofa or wrapping up the day binge watching RuPaul's Drag Race, the living room helps Mikel feel like he is being swept away—if just for a few relaxing moments. Like Mikel, the relationship many of our favorite designers have with their homes h...
