Are K W Nelson Interior Design and Contracting Group Limited’s (HKG:8411) High Returns Really That Great?

Gambar
Today we'll evaluate K W Nelson Interior Design and Contracting Group Limited (HKG:8411) to determine whether it could have potential as an investment idea. To be precise, we'll consider its Return On Capital Employed (ROCE), as that will inform our view of the quality of the business. First, we'll go over how we calculate ROCE. Second, we'll look at its ROCE compared to similar companies. Finally, we'll look at how its current liabilities affect its ROCE. Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it? ROCE measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. All else being equal, a better business will have a higher ROCE. In brief, it is a useful tool, but it is not without drawbacks. Renowned investment researcher Michael Mauboussin has suggested that a high ROCE can indicate that 'one dollar invested in the company generates value of more than one dollar'. So, How Do We Calculate ROCE? The formula for c...

Alison Hammond gives This Morning viewers a tour of her Birmingham home

Gambar
ALISON Hammond gave This Morning viewers a tour of her Birmingham home – but an interior designer said it was done up wrong. The much loved presenter gave Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield a quick look at her home for the segment with Kelly Hoppen. The home boasts a kitchen and dining room, with a wall dedicated to her telly achievements. Below are family photos, showing her with 13-year-old son Aiden, with the whole set up decorated with hanging bulbs. Above the dinning room table - created with a white table and four blue chairs - is a metal framed mirror. Asking for advice, Kelly helped Alison out by telling her to turn the dining room table around - which Alison did live on air. "And then the mirror I'd move above the sofa for now," Kelly added over video chat. "I can't do that right now!" Alison said. Kelly laughed and said: "I didn't expect you to actually do it. That makes the table look better already, put a nice bunch o...

La Costa home transformed into interior designer’s dream

Gambar
For eight years, Renae Farley and her husband, Richard Pommer, spent weekends looking for their forever home, a place that was conducive to entertaining and had a downstairs master suite. They were thinking about building a home when Pommer was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. He died in January 2018. Out of habit, Farley continued the house hunt for a while, but became frustrated and decided to drop the quest. As she was unsubscribing from a real estate site, a house caught her eye. The home, in a quiet La Costa neighborhood abutting the golf course, fit her requirements. So she decided to take a look. When Farley stepped inside the 2,300-square-foot home, she knew. "I bought it on the spot," she said. "It had perfect bones and perfect feng shui." The 26-year-old, four-bedroom, three-bathroom house had been owned by one couple since it was built and was still in original condition with closed-off spaces, pony walls and lots of small, white square tiles set...

Coronavirus will change how we create new vehicles interiors designers say

Gambar
Gorden Wagener has spent a good amount of his coronavirus quarantine thinking about waffles. Daimler's head of design, who created such iconic cars as the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren and Vision Mercedes concepts, wanted to bake bread during his pandemic free time, but soon found the bread maker he wanted was out of stock. So he ordered a waffle iron from Williams-Sonoma instead, and the German and Germany-based designer has been perfecting his at-home recipe for the delightfully dimpled grid of syrup holders ever since. That's how he landed on the idea for a glove-box waffle catapult. When I heard he'd become a waffle master, I asked whether he could do deliveries. "The car is easily smart enough to launch a waffle accurately -- you could write smart messages on the waffle and then throw it!" Wagener suggested on a recent phone call. A paperboy tossing waffles instead of the morning news, he would do it from the new GLE Coupe. Wagener, of course, spends ...

Face furniture to the window and shake up the office: LA design maven Kelly Wearstler on interior tweaks in lockdown

Gambar
Few people are better placed to give advice on how to make our homes more joyful during lockdown than American interior designer, Kelly Wearstler. Cameron Diaz and Ben Stiller are among those who've fallen for her trademark style which evokes local character through the use of natural elements.  And she's a regular fixture at the top of 'best interiors' lists as documented in Architectural Digest, Time magazine and Wallpaper*. She's also responsible for some of the most stylish US hotels – Avalon Beverly Hills, the Viceroy in Miami.  Her work references Bauhaus, Spanish Revival architecture, and the mid-century Italian architects Carlo Scarpa and Gio Ponti. A bold, graphic approach underpins her collaborations and she says she likes things best when they are "perfectly imperfect".  Today she presides over a team of 50 in a 6000 square ft Craig Ellwood modernist building that serves as her studio in west Hollywood; her lighting business alone is wor...

Ask a Designer: Improving your home's function as refuge

Gambar
When your entire life is happening inside your home, it matters how that space feels and functions. Interior designers often focused on this even before self-quarantine, asking clients how they spend their time at home and how various rooms might make them happier. These questions get at the real purpose of a well-designed home. And now they seem more important than ever. "We're expecting more from our homes than we ever have before, and they can serve us in more ways than we've asked in the past,'' says New York-based interior designer Carolyn DiCarlo. ``We've historically looked to trends or magazines to tell us what to put in our homes. But now is a different time. It's time to consider our home as our personal place of refuge, and how to make that happen." Here, DiCarlo and two other interior designers — New York-based Jenny Dina Kirschner and South Carolina-based Elizabeth Stuart — share advice on how they create ...

Redesigned Outback gives Subaru something interior to talk about

Gambar
The Subaru Outback's marketing campaign highlights the crossover's traditional adventure-ready selling points but also something the automaker hopes to be a new pitch — the model's interior. Redesigned for 2020, the Outback's most noticeable new feature is an 11.6-inch tablet-style touch-screen infotainment system on all but its base trim. The layout, a first for the brand, signaled a stark design change from the outgoing model, which had either a 6.5- or 8-inch infotainment screen. Subaru of America is making the redesigned interior a selling point. It bolstered rest of the cabin with more premium materials throughout, including sound-insulating inner film for the windshield and front-door glass. Other available creature comforts include nappa (full grain) leather seats, ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel. One new trim, the Onyx Edition XT, has a gray, two-tone interior with water-repellent seat material, a nod to Subaru owners who bring some of the out...

How the MSU interior design program has handled the online transition

Gambar
The interior design program at Michigan State University is a small one, only accepting 20 students to their program a year. The Human Ecology Building is their home. There, students have 24/7 access so they can get into lab rooms with the programming they need. They have hours-long studio classes where students can work on their projects and receive feedback from their professors. When MSU responded to the COVID-19 outbreak by making the switch to online learning through the rest of the semester and into the summer, Eunsil Lee, an associate professor in the program, didn't think they'd be able to make the transition. "Previously, I thought online studio was impossible," she said. "Now, I found online studio is possible, and it works really well, really fine." Throughout her st...
